Tribes play a major role with regards to natural resource and environmental management within the Great Lakes Region and many of them have Treaty-reserved rights as adjudicated by Federal Court rulings entitling them to shared management of both Inland and Great Lakes resources and affording them a legal property right in said resources.

Traditional Ecological Knowledge, also called by other names including Indigenous Knowledge or Native Science, (hereafter, TEK) refers to the evolving knowledge acquired by indigenous and local peoples over hundreds or thousands of years through direct contact with the environment. An increasing number of scientists and Native people believe that Western Science and TEK are complementary.
